Well, recently I was in Columbus. We got there at around 3AM, and in the morning we went to Tim Hortons to get coffee. That is when I saw this INCREDIBLE collection of video boards on the corner of High and Broad. It seriously looked like something taken straight out of Times Square or Piccadilly Circus. It wasn't a flat video board, but it was wavy and had very creative features, like rotating logos of local companies on top. This got me thinking. Why can't St Louis have something like this? Several street corners come to mind where we could have these. 7th and Washington at the MX, the Gateway Tower, and the Park Pacific Parking Garage. I personally think a Washington Avenue with Video Boards would look INCREDIBLE! There is one small video board on the Parking Garage at Scottrade Center, and we have the Four Seasons, which is very cool. But it would look AMAZING on Wash Ave or at the Gateway Tower! I did notice on the BPV renderings there appeared to be large branded marquees, but nothing ' fantastic'.

I believe it may have originally been Alex's idea, but there was an idea posted on RallySTL that made it through to funding but didn't get funded for tickers and lights on the Park Pacific garage.
I was pretty disheartened that CBS/KMOX didn't take the opportunity to chip in and promote it to gain the rest of the funding. It would have been absolutely perfect for a garage next to their new space. KMOV, even though that's not where they're located, could have gotten in as well since we're talking about CBS.
And that was just a ticker and light boards. Video boards would be even better. Relative to bigger developments, it's a cheap concept, but it needs someone to step up and back it, and nobody did.
It's still a great idea, though.

Years ago, I remember reading about the Roberts Orpheum (I miss when it was the American Theater...) and their interests in having a large marquee sign outside of it. However, they had to deal with an old, antiquated law on the City's books prohibiting many types of these signs. I would suggest looking for these articles and learning more, because we may have some precedent for why we don't have these signs currently.
^It's not as big as most movie marquees and not attached to a historic structure, but the MX Movies marquee plays video and has a bright, modern look. There are also smallish video boards on the Tucker & Clark garage. Considering those two, I'd think the Park Pacific garage would qualify. But there certainly could be barriers to placing them on landmarked or historic buildings.

Definitely. I think it would be okay for the city to identify where would be an appropriate place for something like the Columbus signs or even a larger district, but like NYC and Times Square, it should be concentrated and not define the character of downtown. I'm not sure where the best place would be.... ideally like Times Square in a pedestrian/entertainment zone with not a whole lot of historic architecture.wabash wrote:But there certainly could be barriers to placing them on landmarked or historic buildings.
Not too keen on the idea, but sure, I'll take a shot:
Where the New Mississippi River Bridge funnels down to Tucker, there now exists a triangle (bound by 13th, Cass and the new Tucker access). Wouldn't turn down a tall, cool wedge building (think NYC's Flatiron Building) with some vid screens, tasteful neon signs, and tickers), with traffic flowing to each side.
In related news, now that KMOV moved into the Park Pacific, that damnable garage is even worse. Can't help but think how a public square (similar to Chicago's Pioneer Court at NBC Bldg.) leading up to street level tv studios in PP would look. C'est la vie...

correction:
KMOV is still at ONE Memorial Drive
KMOX moved to the Park Pacific
