Hopefully plans for a downtown fashion incubator materialize:

Here is their website:

https://saintlouisfashionfund.org/about/history/

I'm not sure if they have a specific building in mind.

I recently spoke with the ladies responsible for this initiative, and they are targeting early 2016 to be up and running.

Also, they've targeted a place in downtown for the incubator.

^ thanks... not asking u to share where if you even know, but do you have an idea of the square footage involved?

I know the space, but I am unsure of the square footage. My best guess is 8-10k.

I don't feel comfortable sharing the location since they haven't officially announced it.

The 1st floor of the Bogen.

^ not quite, but pretty close:

http://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/morn ... ntown.html

The Fashion Fund has signed a letter of intent to lease 7,500 square feet of space in the Art Lofts Building at Washington Avenue and 16th Street downtown. The St. Louis Fashion Incubator will occupy 5,000 square feet of space on the ground floor of the building and an additional 2,500 square feet on the mezzanine level.

Sounds like a great project and hopefully it helps re-establish the industry here.

EDIT: Bold added for the benefit of jstriebel

You'd think they would've bent over backward to attract a tenant like this. I guess not.

Bogen would be high exposure, but I do like this further down Washington as that area past 15th or so needs a boost.

Does anybody know which building this is? I'm hoping this is in the Windows on Washington building—the retail space on the west side.

What I'm hoping it isn't is the space where the Blowout Bar opened about a year or so ago next to Studio 16. For one, I get my hair cut at Studio 16, and they're the same people behind the Blowout Bar, so that'd be bad news for them. For another, it'd mean musical chairs rather than actually getting a new storefront on line.

It's in the corner spot where Trailnet was located I believe.

Don't you subscribe to my newsletter? As I posted a few comments above, the plan is for the Art Lofts Building. It's vacant space now, I'm pretty sure.

This is a very generous and detailed article about the history of fashion in St. Louis. It gives the impression that St. Louis is trying to be like New York, but that it should try to be more like Vietnam. I believe the writer would like St. Louis to do more domestic manufacturing than runway photography.

The first class of 6 designers has been selected for the Incubator... sounds like January will be the start of the two year program for the class.

If successful, this initiative could really help fulfill downtown's potential... I can see boutiques/production space, etc. sprouting up and finally establishing a solid retail district.

Informative and positive story on some of the designers at the Fashion Incubator. Good to see this happening downtown.

Hmmm...not sure where to post this or what it even means, but Downtown STL is promoting a new plan for the future of the Garment District:

Count me as skeptical. But at least it has clear boundaries and is well-defined:

"The Garment District is roughly bounded by Delmar Blvd., Tucker Blvd., St. Charles Street, N.
15th Street, Olive Street, N. 18th Street, Washington Ave., and Lucas Ave. "

I drew a map to give people a better visual of the boundaries since the written version was a little confusing.

I believe the historic garment district was narrower and longer than the area they're looking at now. It mostly ran along Washington from 18th to 9th and stretched a block north and south.

First thing they should do is get Brown to open a signature location displaying all their brands. Scratch that first thing they should do is get Brown to rename themselves to Brown Shoe.

I'm curious to see if they keep this pretty limited to the fashion sorts of creative. If you just skip a little west, Midtown Alley is already a growing and thriving creative hub with a lot of private investment over the past decade or so. The majority of that creative is design/marketing/photo etc.

I'd hate to see the city undercut one emerging district by pushing another. Hopefully the targeted types of business allow these two areas to compliment not compete with each other.
