I've always envisioned a Metrolink/heavy-rail passenger line going to Edwardsville-SIUE/Glen Carbon via the McKinley Bridge with stops in Venice/Horseshoe Lake/Granite City/etc along the way. Of course, this linked up with a Northside line 'round about Florissant or Grand near Natural Bridge Road (maybe Fairground Park?).
I know an SIUE extension off the existing line probably makes the most sense economically, but I'd love to see the City lay the groundwork for a true regional transportation system converging in and around St. Louis' core and start tying in some of these oft-bypassed communities...like Granite City.
I still have fond memories of playing some midnight hockey at Granite City's ice rink in college. There may have been a couple of 12-packs sitting on the bench...
There's a general "Downtown Revival" going on throughout the metro east, which I'm very proud of. Collinsville, Edwardsville, Belleville, and Granite City are all taking part. I can't believe how amazing downtown Belleville looks now, but I have people telling me Collinsville looks better. I haven't been to Downtown Collinsville in awhile, but I'm sure it's a site to see. The Metro East use to be the truely urban suburbs of St Louis, before the city spread further west. After the mid 60's things went down hill. In the 2000's things started reversing, and the appreciation people had for their downtowns did too. I hope it continues!
