It'll be interesting to see the impact that the Alton theatre has on the mall in which it will be located, Alton Square.
I took a stroll through that mall in the summer of 2007 after spending the better part of a week with my family at the Pere Marquette Lodge. I couldn't believe how dead that mall was- it made Northwest Plaza look like a boomtown.
The mall's three anchors- JC Penney, Sears, and Macy's- are still there. That Macy's is very interesting- it has a very disco-fabulous 1970s look inside. I always figured those anchors would wind up in some mall or lifestyle center development in nearby Glen Carbon, Edwardsville, or even in Wood River along the I-255 extension.
Even if the theater doesn't save what's left of the mall, it's still good to see some investment in that part of Alton.
(Sadly, Granite City could use the help even more IMHO.)
It's interesting that both theaters are going to be built from scratch. I guess the old Alton Cine and Nameoki Twin are both in too bad a shape to be renovated.

The Nameoki Twin has been demolished for several years; a parking lot and Applebee's Microwave-and-Serve Emporium has opened on the site.
