Scott Air Force Base — Already the hub of U.S. military transport, Scott Air Force Base is one of six finalists to be headquarters for computer warfare, the Pentagon announced Thursday.
Winning would mean about 450 jobs and a stronger position for one of the St. Louis region's three largest employers. In 2005, Scott was spared when the government closed 22 military bases.
Other air bases in the running are: Barksdale, in Louisiana; Lackland, in Texas; Langley, in Virginia; Offutt, in Nebraska; and Peterson, in Colorado.
A decision is expected by the end of June.
