Recall move aimed at Blagojevich

By Kathleen Haughney

POST-DISPATCH SPRINGFIELD BUREAU

03/06/2008

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A frustrated Illinois House committee approved a measure Wednesday that would allow voters to remove a sitting governor and other state officials — in a move some say is directly aimed at Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn, who testified in favor of the amendment, dodged questions from lawmakers and reporters that he was supporting the measure because of Blagojevich's rocky relationship with state officials. Instead, he offered that citizens should have the ability to recall any elected official.

"In private life, when there are defective products, there is an immediate recall," Quinn said.

What do you Illinoisans (and everybody else) think about this?

Democrat or Republican, this has been the consensus amongst Illinoisans.

I agree, and I am generally a democrat leaning independent.

He has tried to run the state like a mob boss and people just get tired of that. I am not sure we need a recall, but this needs to be his last term. If the Republicans had a decent candidate and were not in a year when everyone was voting against Bush and Republicans ... he would have been out in 2006. He just sort of got lucky that he got 4 more years.

I think whether or not there is a recall may depend on what happens in November. If Obama loses in November (he will be the nominee, it is a near mathematical certainty), then I could see Democrats getting behind a recall effort so that they could place Obama in the relative protection of the governorship for a 2012 run (getting rid of the experience problem, but allowing him to miss all the controversial votes in the Senate). This is especially true if Hillary somehow manages to steal the nomination from him.

But, if Obama doesn't factor into the equation, then I doubt there will be a recall or if there is I doubt it will succeed. The Democrats don't just want to hand the Republicans the Governor's Mansion. Most likely is that some backroom conversations will make clear to Rod that this is it for him and he will announce he is not seeking reelection and then Quinn or another Democratic candidate can get the governor's mansion in 2010.

I still can't believe that this is not in every state's constitution.
