An underground mine collapsed, creating a large sinkhole smack in the middle of a soccer field in Alton. Nobody was hurt.

There's some pretty cool photos, and even a video of it happening (sorry, don't know how to post links from my phone).

Pretty scary. I didn't realize that it also swallowed a set of bleachers. And of course, the whole STL area is riddled with underground voids. I'm really surprised it doesn't happen more often.

It sounds like there is an active mine under that soccer field. No miners were hurt, and nobody was on the soccer field. 

Pretty nuts that they mine under the community.

What type of mine?

The owner of the mine is New Frontier Materials. The subsidiary that was mining is called Bluff City Minerals. 

So, I believe this is a rock or mineral mine.
