O'Fallon delays two road programs

O'Fallon officials have agreed to delay two road projects this year to ensure the city's transportation sales tax budget does not slide into a deficit.



The projects being delayed are repaving Mexico Road from Highway K to Bryan Road and building an access road into Westhoff Park.



Todd Criswell, director of community development, told Mayor Donna Morrow and the Board of Aldermen last week that he is scrapping the two road projects this year to keep the city's transportation fund solvent.



Criswell said the transportation fund, financed by a half-cent sales tax throughout the city, has a deficit of almost $9,000.



Morrow said the deficit is largely the result of sales tax revenue lagging about 2 percent behind administration projections.



Criswell said delaying the two projects would save about $1.85 million.



But Morrow cautioned the aldermen that delaying projects this year is a temporary move and foreshadows a more pressing problem.
