One of the most hectic, congested and confusing interchanges in St. Charles County is about ready to get a $1 million makeover.

Road construction to alleviate the traffic around Cave Springs and Interstate 70 is under way, said Mike Werion, capital improvement project (CIP) manager for the city of St. Peters.

Improvements for the area include: a new right turn lane on eastbound Mexico Road at Muegge Road; new lanes on both northbound and southbound Cave Springs from I-70 to Mexico; more turn lanes on Veterans Memorial Parkway west of Cave Springs; and new traffic signals, sidewalks and sewers.

This project, which totals just under $1 million, is being funded jointly by the city of St. Peters, the city of St. Charles, St. Charles County and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT).

MoDOT is also adding a lane to the ramp onto eastbound I-70, said Berry Bergman, MoDOT's project manager.

"Construction will be started sometime this month," Bergman said. "We are scheduled to complete it by Oct. 1 this year."

Werion said construction on Mexico Road started a few weeks ago.

"We're aiming to have it done by the end of the year, before there is any snow," Werion said.

Niall Jansson, resident engineer with MoDOT, said it will assist in easing the area's traffic.

"We'll change the traffic signals accordingly," Jansson said. "It should increase traffic flow onto the highway and alleviate some congestion."

Werion said a lot of planning went into this project to make sure area businesses were satisfied with the results.

"Most of them were happy and we held public meetings to alleviate any fears," Werion said. "The improvements should really facilitate the safe flow of traffic for the intersection."

Although motorists are urged to find alternate routes during construction, Werion said the city is trying to prevent traffic problems.

"We're pushing the contractor to do as much road work as they can in the evening," Werion said. "We've restricted the times they could work so the construction doesn't impede the traffic flow."

JRW Construction is the contractor for the Cave Springs road work and N.B. West Contracting Company is the contractor for the ramp.

More congestion= the less people will want to own cars or live farther from their jobs
