The nearly 50-year-old Highway 94 bridge at Interstate 70 is planned for demolition this weekend as construction crews move forward with a complete overhaul of the interchange.
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is urging motorists to avoid the area as traffic will not be allowed on the bridge from about 10 p.m. Friday through 9 a.m. Sunday. Shortly after midnight Friday, I-70 traffic at Highway 94 will be restricted to one lane and diverted over the exit and entrance ramps through 9 a.m. Sunday, said Chris Sutton, a MoDOT spokesman.
The $6.6 million project includes upgrading a bridge that currently is "five lanes, very narrow and congested," Sutton said. Expected to be completed in spring 2006, the bridge will feature a wider driving surface with six lanes. The project's funds also paid for improvements made last fall to the eastbound I-70 bridge at South Fifth Street.
Jim Gremaud, MoDOT's St. Charles County engineer, said the work requiring lane closures could be completed in 24 hours.
"We're saying the bridge will be closed until Sunday morning as a worst case scenario," Gremaud said Monday. "We're hoping for a short impact time and hopefully we can get everything opened up quickly."
Replacing and widening the Highway 94 bridge is just one step in MoDOT's wider plan to renovate the interchange. Expected to begin in Spring 2006, the $20 million overhaul includes constructing: a single-point diamond interchange on the bridge with all traffic coming to one signalized intersection; a roundabout at St. Charles Avenue and Boone's Lick Road; two new bridges at Highway 94 north and south of I-70 to eliminate the need for two traffic signals; and an additional lane on southbound Highway 94 from I-70 to Friedens Road.
Work on the interchange project is expected to be finished in fall 2007.
