Herbies is opening and I hear it is supposed to be good, haven't had a chance to check it out yet...
More info on Herbie's: http://www.bizjournals.com/stlouis/stor ... tory8.html
Gabe Grossberg has stepped forward as one of three investors who will open the shuttered Balaban's restaurant in the Central West End in October. The French bistro will open under a new name, Herbie's, an homage to the eatery's founder, Herbie Balaban.
Jeff Orbin and Aaron Teitelbaum, co-owners of Maplewood's Monarch Restaurant, and Gabe Grossberg, CEO and president of Delmar Gardens Enterprises, plan to invest $1 million in upgrades at the site at 405 N. Euclid Ave. Citizens Bank is a lender on the project.
Herbie's owners signed a lease Aug. 12 with the building's owners, Pete Rothschild, principal of Central West End-based Rothschild Development, and Shaun Hayes, former president of Missouri banking for National City Bank. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The 10,000-square-foot restaurant will seat 120 diners.
Balaban's, a longtime mainstay in the Central West End, shut its doors Jan. 27. Its owners, Brendan Marsden and Harlee Sorkin, said Balaban's generated between $2 million and $2.5 million a year before it closed. Marsden and Sorkin bought Balaban's in December 2006 from an investment group led by Ken McIntyre. The late Herb Balaban founded the restaurant in 1972.
Orbin said the restaurant will be a throwback to its time under Balaban's ownership in the 1980s. "We're reincarnating Balaban's from basically its glory days," Orbin said. "It's kind of an ode to Herbie Balaban."

Hopefully this place will find its crowd and thrive.
I recall way back when (1970's?), there used to be another Herbie's establishment on Euclid. I wonder if there is any connection. Probably not, given the time span between the two.

You'll be glad to know, then, that they've brought back everything you mentioned (except for brunch). Went there on Saturday for my birthday and was very impressed (I had never been there when it was Balaban's). Per my girlfriend, the pumpkin bread pudding with cinnamon ice cream was to die for.carrieocity kills wrote:so exciting! i wonder if they will do brunch again?

Nah, I just figured that all these 'net-savvy folks had already read everything written on the subject, so they already know the answer.
Herbie's was a bar at Euclid and Maryland owned by a man by the name of Herbie Balaban. He also owned...you guessed it...Balabans. The reopening of Balabans is called Herbie's because that was the name of the previous owner and the wanted to return to the rep the place had when it first opened. Thus the circa 72 gig.
And guess who's back in the bartending arena...

I could have sworn there was a thread about this arcade bar going in where Herbie's was. Up-Down Bar. Can't find it! Anyway, it's opening tonight.

I'm usually all for new ventures and investment but replacing the swank of Herbie's with paper plates and fake dive bar feels.....why couldn't they have picked literally any other building?!?danke0 wrote: I could have sworn there was a thread about this arcade bar going in where Herbie's was. Went to Up-Down last Friday and it was a great time! Plenty of games and multiple places to get drinks (there were like three bars in the building), and even though it was crowded inside you could go to the more spacious back courtyard and hang out there. The vibe matched the one I first went to in KC.danke0 wrote: I could have sworn there was a thread about this arcade bar going in where Herbie's was. Up-Down Bar. Can't find it! The place was packed all the way up until close (1:30 am). Seemed like every other twenty-something in town was there. I think this is a great addition to the neighborhood.

This was on NextDoor. Unfortunately the NIMBY's are still very much after their heads.Hey everyone, For those of you I haven't spoken to or met, this is Josh Ivey, one of the owners of Up-Down. Several of you have reached out through different mediums to ask questions about or offer help and support after the court decision today. Myself and my staff could not appreciate that more. A quick update, we are still open, and have been working with the City to make sure we are in full compliance. I know a lot of people have questions and I would invite you to join our facebook group designated for updates on this topic. I don't want to use NextDoor as a forum for debate or planning, but you are all welcome to message me privately on here, or email me at josh@updownarcadebar.com. We will be updating the facebook group when we find out more information. I would like to note, this is not a suit against Up-Down, it is against the city questioning their licensing procedure. The ruling did not state that it believed we were a detriment, it just asked the city to follow procedure in stating why we were not. Several of my staff have relocated themselves and families to come open this arcade and be apart of this opening, and we really appreciate all support, especially from you neighbors. https://www.facebook.com/groups/350903662264326/
Now Balaban's is moving back; going in the former Art Glass Unlimited space just across the street from their former home.
