I drove by Jacques the other day and there were signs up covering the Jacques signs that said

B Federko's...

By my guess, Bernie Federko appears to be taking over the space, if so, that's pretty cool...

Anyone have an info

I never had the chance to make it to Jacques, probably because it's relatively out of the way compared to the rest of downtown, and thanks to the Blues' mediocre play this season and the lockout the year before that, I haven't been to a Blues game since 2003.

A restaurant cannot survive on a name alone, but I would think that B. Federko's would be a wonderful fit- and like you said- the Mike Shannon's for Blues devotees!

B. Federko's? Sounds too much like a bistro of some sorts while copying J. Buck's. Why not just call it Bernie Federko's?

lets hope the blues stay here after 2011 then........ I like the sound of just "Bernies" if its a Sports Bar hockey type place, and if its more upscale "Federko's"....

Good point, I didn't think about that. That is a bit cheesy.

Bernie Federko used to have a restaurant at Big Bend and Forest Park Pkwy some years ago.

I went to Jacques once, hung out during a bragin' rights game. Clearly, if Kiel isn't rocking, this bar is located in a poor spot to capture much other activity. Place was nice, food was ok, even if over priced. NOt bad not great. A sports bar, but not a great one. Man.. if only the city would do something with the adjacent Clark Street space, maybe something positive could hapen...

From the Sauce Magazine Bytes column of 4/28/2006:

A beer with Bernie?

Blues fans on their way to or from the Savvis Center can stop in for a beer with Bernie Federko ? or, if not with the Hall of Fame center himself, at least in the new Steak and Sports Grille that bears his name. It will be on the ground floor of the Sheraton Suites Hotel in the former Jaques Sports Bar space.

My parents used to park at the Sheraton for Cards games and have a beer a Jacques before catching the shuttle. I always thought it was a nice space, but it's not in a highly visible place.

And the Clark reference was a good one JMed. Gotta love a huge surface lot right there, talk about sucking the energy out of a potentially good neighborhood. I think Clark Street could really become a viable street once Cupples is finished, but that lot just kills the area.

Looks like there's conflicting information- the hotel website suggests that Federko's will co-exist with Jacques, while the Sauce blurb indicates that Federko's will replace Jacques. Can anyone confirm one way or another?

THe signs on the actual hotel are covering up the Jacques signs...I can't see any reason why they would have 2 sports bars, my guess is that while they are converting they leave both names on the website, so that nobody thinks Jacques just shut down.

How about when is it supposed to close?

A friend told me the other day it was closed. Was he right? Anyone know?

If so, that certainly didn't last long.

Hmm... this happened just when I'm becoming more interested in Blues games and thought about stopping in before or after a visit to Scottrade Center.

If true, this is the second Federko's bar/restaurant to close. He needs to stop putting his name on joints like this.

Could help some of the places at Union Station with pre/post game drinkers.

I usually do Flannerys or Side Door for hockey game drinking: just a short three block walk from Scottrade Center. Mercury and J Bucks are other options if you park to the east.

The total inability of the Sheraton to sustain a restaurant (this is the third one to close) should put to rest any illusions about the "ancillary" development supported by sporting arenas.

Yeah, sounds like the reverse Midas Touch to me.

Those are good options, and none of them is that far from Scottrade Center.

Bonwich, maybe you can prove me wrong, but I don't recall seeing any flattering reviews for Federko's place either.

Not that I was a regular at any of the establishments that occupied the space, but I did get the impression that none of them were particularly well managed. There are many times that I can recall standing on the corner at 14th and Clark thinking of places to go after the game and/or concert, and I don't recall Jacque's/Federko's/whatever the first place was, ever entering my mind. You can stand on that corner and not even notice the place unless you are looking for it. That is poor management.

And, not that I disagee with you Joe, but you must admit that that whole area is not exactly conducive to pedestrian activity. It is the most pedestrian-hostile environment downtown, after the whole I-70 mess (under and over), of course.

^ That's also the impression I got of the places that occupied that space in the Sheraton. I also agree with you about the pedestrian-hostile environment there. It's something you'd think the powers-that-be would want to correct since the multimodal transportation center is nearby.
