I was told by a friend on Saturday night that J&A's was closed (Jimmy & Andy's at Laclede and Newstead). I didn't believe it at first, but stopped by Sunday morning and saw this through the front window:

No sign on the door, just a cleaned out bar. Does anyone know the story? If they're actually gone for good I'm heartbroken. They were supposedly the oldest liquor license in the city: http://stltaverns.com/CityNeighborhoods ... /J&As.html.

Yep, it's true. A huge loss for the city. I believe the bar declared bankruptcy.

I used to live on Pine between Newstead & Taylor a few years back. I got drinks there a handful of times; it was always pretty dead when I patronized it. Felt like most of its clientele was of an older (45+) set.

Sad to see it go.

I used to buy beer there in high school in the late 80's...

From everyone I ever talked to there, it seemed like that decade was really this spot's "heyday."

I just heard it was re-opening under different ownership in a few weeks. I hope so. I love that bar.

If it's true that it's re-opening though, I don't know anything about whether it'll retain it's J&A's feel or if it'll be a whole different bar.

I loved everything about that place. Ok, everything but the cigarette smoke.

I was just looking through instagram and noticed that a new mural went up on J&A's brick facade! The post said that the the tavern with the oldest running liquor license in STL will be re-opening in July.

Great work by whoever is behind the instagram handle: stl_sign_and_mural

I discovered this place while looking for apartments the first time I returned to STL in 2008 and it always piqued my curiosity. I ended up in SWG, but started seeing their ads in one of those food ad flyers around town for cheap burgers and beers during Blues/Cards games, sadly still never getting in. My brother went there a few times during law school and had good things to say about the laid back vibe. I'll have to scope out the mural and finally get in the 2.0 version.

Did this place ever reopen?
