The Complex (at Grand and Chouteau) is within walking distance of the Grand MetroLink station. But if you are going late at night I would suggest caution if you choose to walk from the station.
As for Attitudes--it's in the Grove near Atomic Cowboy, Novak's and other clubs along Manchester. That one is closer to the CWE metrolink station. I've walked to the Grove from that station in the daylight no prob. Late at night I don't know if it is such a great idea. There may be a bus you can take from the station to Manchester.

Attitudes is one of the gay bars, as is the Complex.
Attitudes would be a hike from the Metrolink. If I were you, I would walk down to the Metrolink Station on Taylor, take the 93 bus down to Manchester and Tower Grove and walk the two blocks east. It's not the safest area ever (I lived on this block for a year), but I did it several times without incident.
As for the Complex, it's just a block or two off of the Grand stop on the Metrolink.

i would take a cab- its not that far but far enough I wouldnt want to walk it. You could take washington ave to sarah and go right *i think its right* but i would srsly recommend cabbing it.
I havent been to Attitudes in years- Novaks is the happening spot these days- right across the street. You might also like Freddies on the same street but they dont have a dance floor....

unfortunatley, we don't have bars open until 5am, because it is likely to take that long to get a cab

Well they aren't really straight "friendly." In the manner that I felt as if I was a piece of meat amongst many great white sharks. If you are a guy then it's assumed you are there for a reason. I'll tell you what, I can empathize with how women may feel in certain circumstances. Yet it was a very fun experience. I do enjoy different situations.
In terms of it being woman friendly. The only woman I saw was serving up jello shots. There are two sections. The front area is rather laid back, but the dance floor area, it's a bit of a more aggressive atmosphere. This is where I was approached and had some interesting encounters. When I told this guy I was straight he asked why the hell was I there? Then he laughed and slapped me. But it was a good time. Although I won't be going back unless I'm with friends.
Firemen are simply guys dressed as firemen.

^Well actually, in my limited experience, bears don't really like the whole effeminate mannerisms. Gay culture is quite diverse and it shouldn't be stereotyped as one homogeneous identity.

My limited experience at gay bars is quite the opposite, that if you're a straight guy, you're virtually invisible. The gay guys seem to know (probably because you're wearing the wrong sorts of clothes).
If you're a straight guy, make sure if you go to a gay bar that your gay friends you're with are the ones who go up the the bar to get the drinks, not you, and not the girls. The shots get poured a lot bigger.

Attitudes, Novak's, and Freddie's (reopening as "Just John" -- terrible name IMO) are all walkable along Manchester, along with Atomic Cowboy. That stretch of Manchester is now very safe, but the problem is the area you'd have to walk through to get to them from the Metro. It's a long walk and at night it would be pretty desolate.
Complex is very close to the Grand metro stop. But again, thinking of being there at night... I would use caution.
