So I've heard from multiple people to avoid the Wal Mart in Maplewood, for safety reasons, not because they are a terrible corporation (which they are).

Is there any where else?

My wife being home all day in Maplewood soon, I never would have thought that the Wal Mart would be suspect.

LOL! You got some bad information. That is 100% completely FALSE. I honestly can't think of anywhere around maplewood that I would avoid. If you think that wal-mart is somewhere to avoid (economic factors aside), you are probably both paranoid and racist.

there was recently some sort of incident/shoplifting/assault with a deadly weapon (car) there, which is currently a soup de jour. i don't know the details. it doesn't reflect on maplewood.

IDK, it doesn't seem any more dangerous in Maplewood than anywhere else in St. Louis... Is there lots of crime reported there??? I haven't really seen much of anything bad coming from there...

I actually think it's a lot of fun hanging out there all the time, with the Bottleworks, Jive & Wail, that bar with the floating barstool seats that I can't remember the name of, and Mooselvania agency. And how can you not love Saratoga and the Maplewood Diner, Pantera's!

My friend from way back at SLU lives on Yale and it's always been a welcoming neighborhood.

Good news. Thank you for that. I was hoping it was more of a West County idea of "dangerous" and not an actual dangerous. Like I said, I went there one night when scoping out the area to grab some things before we went back to Fairview, and nothing seemed amiss at all.

Anyone else have thoughts on it?

That happens a lot down here in Houston , mainly by angry women who find out their husband has been cheating on them.

Oh and whenever someone pulls out in front of the downtown train system

I go there from time to time and it isn't that bad. There are a lot of shop lifters but nothing too serious. Besides that i think someone was killed in the parking lot over the summer, but it wasn't random, i think someone wanted that guy dead. I tried to look for the news story but couldn't find it. However i did find something about a robbery there earlier this week but that can happen anywhere. None of this would stop me from going there, what would stop me is all the people i know who rented the houses that were there before and got kicked out with nowhere to go.. but that is a different rant.

Like with any Wal-Mart, you'll see some scary looking people, but there's no reason to fear for your safety in Maplewood.

Why did they get kicked out from homes they were renting?

yeah, eminent domain, a lot of the people who lived their didn't own. I mean that happens everywhere but with all the developments in brentwood / maplewood it hit home for me. But there is not a place in maplewood i wouldn't go, wonderful city.

I agree. Maplewood is as safe as any town you'll find in the county. That WalMart is a crowded, chaotic mess - but it's safe. Your wife should have nothing to fear.

Are we talking about the Wal-Mart on Hanley!?! Crap, if someone doesn't think that place is safe then there's not where left to go!!!! I have been to a Wal-Mart near Florissant somewhere. It was a little rough, but not dangerous. As far as inner ring areas to avoid - most of the areas you or your wife are likely to not feel at home in are north of U-City. Enjoy Maplewood!

I just posted on the real Walmart thread, but I'll give you the brief version:

Me: young, cute, white, professional woman

Maplewood Walmart: typical Walmart assortment of moms, kids, teenagers and crazies

Crimes I've witnessed at said Walmart: 0

Harrassment I've received at said Walmart: 0

Yes, your wife will be fine in the afternoon, and at night, for that matter. Until I read a couple of threads on here, it didn't occur to me to even worry about things happening there.

Also, downtown Maplewood is awesome. :)

^ Hey, at least you got Boogaloo right! :)

Maplewood's a great place in which to eat, drink, shop, and live these days! If I ever move west of Skinker, it's near the top of my list. Aside from the aforementioned places, I also like Monarch (pricey but worth it), Acero (in the old Arthur Clay's spot), El Scorcho, and for those of you with children, I'd also recommend Cooper Ella.

The Saratoga Lanes bowling alley is pretty cool as well- there just aren't enough old-school places like this left.

Maplewood is a great community, especially now that many buildings along Manchester Road and Sutton Boulevard have been redeveloped. I know safety has been brought up here before, but IMHO there's absolutely no reason to worry, as I've always felt very safe in Maplewood.

The category here would be random acts of violence or crimes against persons, right? This is a tough category to avoid because the criminal acts are by there nature, impossible to predict.

To be ignorant, I'd suggest avoiding all enclosed shopping malls. Never, ever again visit a shopping mall. Restoring main street retailing to our communities would be a huge plus.
