I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know that the St. Louis Blues song by W.C. Handy has lyrics. I happened to run across a u-tube video of a gal singing the lyrics. So then I looked around on the net and found this really slick rendition done out on the streets of -- St Louis? , can't quite recognize the street -- by Peter Cincotti, in a Harry Connick Jr. Style. It may be new Orleans in the background. Any guesses?

P.S. AOL Music makes you watch a short add before the song starts.

Let's all sing!!!

I hate to see that evening sun go down,

I hate to see that evening sun go down,

'Cause my lovin' baby done left this town.

If I feel tomorrow, like I feel today,

If I feel tomorrow, like I feel today,

I'm gonna pack my trunk and make my getaway.

Oh, that St. Louis woman, with her diamond rings,

She pulls my man around by her apron strings.

And if it wasn't for powder and her store-bought hair,

Oh, that man of mine wouldn't go nowhere.

I got those St. Louis blues, just as blue as I can be,

Oh, my man's got a heart like a rock cast in the sea,

Or else he wouldn't have gone so far from me.

I love my man like a schoolboy loves his pie,

Like a Kentucky colonel loves his rocker and rye

I'll love my man until the day I die, Lord, Lord.

I got the St. Louis blues, just as blue as I can be, Lord, Lord!

That man's got a heart like a rock cast in the sea,

Or else he wouldn't have gone so far from me.

I got those St. Louis blues, I got the blues, I got the blues, I got the blues,

My man's got a heart like a rock cast in the sea,

Or else he wouldn't have gone so far from me, Lord, Lord!

Take me back!

Come on and take me back!

I wanna go back, I wanna go back to Saint Louie!

People often forget the importance of this song to blues music. Ella Fitzgerald, in this particular compilation album, does two versions of the song, which is unusual (the "hot" rendition is one of my favorites).

I referenced this song last year when someone posted the "What are you listening to?" thread. I first heard it when Red 104.1 was running it a couple times a week in summer, 2005. Slick is the best way to describe his rendition, I really like it. From what I read, that video is shot in New York (Cincotti's home, I think).

The atmosphere in the video makes me think Soulard should have an outdoor blues day a couple times of year. Close off an intersection for the day and have the bands play right on the street, no stage. Better yet, Cincotti should come and play it on Clark Street to open up BPV.

And to round out your listening experience, check out Arthur Williams' "Ain't Goin' Back to East St. Louis"

^Good call.

"Stay away from East St Louis, boy. No tellin' what they might do.....

they may cut ya, they may shoot you to."

Also Erskine Ogelsby's "Blues Dancin" Track 6: "Back at BB's:

"We're gonna show you how we do it in St. Louis.....that's on the river you know."
