Please come support St. Louis' ONLY All-Women Flat Track Roller Derby League, The Arch Rival Roller Girls, this Saturday night at the All American Sports Mall at 55 and Lindbergh in South County (sorry the venue is in the county but we couldnt find a venue big enough to fit a track and an audience in the city. We are all skates and ears if you have any leads....) as we begin our 3rd season with a match-off between the Smashinistas and the Stunt Devils.

Doors open at 7, bout starts at 8. It is an all ages event- and yes, there is a bar. The afterparty is upstairs at Van Patricks which is always a good time.

We were recently inducted into the Women's Flat Track Derby Association which is a prestigious organization of approximately 40 (out of over 100) leagues in the nation. We played Chicago last January and will play Nebraska, Indiana, and Arkansas and other cities to be determined this upcoming season. Kansas City is currently number 1 in the nation. Help us get there, too. Show some support for your homegirls!

xoxoxo

ps this first bout's theme is The Good, The Bad and the Derby. Its a Western theme. Yee Haw!

No way! Banked track is the only real roller derby.

Thats funny to me cuz everyone who used to watch derby on tv after wrestling at the Chase back in the 70s tells me it was so fake and staged. Our roller derby is legit.

Besides, only 2 of the leagues in the nation have banked tracks so they can only play each other. Plus, the audience can get closer with a flat track. Some of our fans sit right on the track - in the "splash zone". At their own risk of course! No kids allowed in the splash zone. Someone will get hit sitting there. 8)

What ads? Our ads feature our own girls. Anyway, we have such a wide variety of girls who skate with us, you cant really make blanket statments about us. We are just too diverse.

The roller derby from the 70s was real. It was life that was fake.

I can never quite figure this roller derby thing out. The whole thing seems like a bizarre, post-feminist, quasi-misogynistic, spectacle of semi-sexualized violence. For some reason, the women who participate seem to prefer to refer to themselves as girls. They dress up in what are often overtly provocative costumes and then participate in a game that is only interesting because of the T&A, the physical violence, and the fantastic wipeouts; the rest is just skating in circles. Am I supposed to come and watch the "girls," or the violence, or both? Is this women claiming the right to exploit their own sexuality, and the right to be as barbarous as men, and thus somehow liberating? How do others perceive this? I'm not a puritan, I am an anthropologist.

where do you get your exploiting sexuality ideas from? we wear more clothes than volleyball players, swimmers and probably even tennis players. no one is talking about sex, having sex or being sexual in anyway (?)

i think the combination of women + wheels will always be inherently sexy to men but dont let that confuse you with the sport. Its a legitimate game with defined rules and real athleticism.

Again, we cant speak for all of our girls' individual polictics because we are so diverse. I guess its a fine topic for discussion but I dont think you can ever fit all of us into one box. its simply not possible with this group.

I can never quite figure this roller derby thing out.

Think of it as ballet in spandex; opera on wheels; kabuki with nicknames; and NASCAR without the spitting.

Carrie, the bottom of you and your friend's ass-cheeks (I believe that is you, no?) disagree with your assertion of a completely asexual environment.

and here is "Chokehold Chanel"

"Grave Danger" co-captain of the Stunt Devils I believe

I could go on. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it, but it is sexualized.

The bottom pic is from Venus Envy, not a bout. And no thats not me- I was working late that night.

The middle picture is from a private league-only party, not a bout.

The top picture is from a bout and yes thats me in the star tights. Nothing sexual going on in that shot- is there?

Our bouts are family friendly- our parents and children and co-workers and clients come to them.

I cant speak to what goes on outside of bouts. Like, i said we are a diverse group and yes some of our girls are a bit on the wild side

PostMar 21, 2008#19

forgot to mention that the middle pic is in response to Enya Nightmare and Chokehold Chanel being nominated best-ass at our awards banquet at the Way Out Club.

I was also nominated, along with some other Smashinistas, thankyouverymuch

What is this, the moral majority? So there's a bit of sex appeal to the whole experience, Big deal! I know plenty of chicks whose main reason for watching pro or college sports was to ogle the guys on the court/field/gridiron.

I'll be there tomorrow night with my g/f and a couple other friends. I've never been but my buddy in New Orleans saw their league and said it was a blast.

I used to watch roller derby on TV, and I knew it was mostly fake, but the wipeouts were real, so I thought it was cool. I never understood it, I just liked seeing people get knocked down, and the girls in spandex (duh) certainly didn't hurt my viewership.

I would have to say it is somewhat sexualized, considering there is a "best ass" award :D. I haven't seen that one on any NCAA awards shows yet, but maybe its coming ;)

TGE, for some reason I can't see your picture? Can everyone else see it? Hey, I want to see some girls who got nominated for "best ass" too. hehe

well we did earn these nice asses with all the skating. some of us are very proud of our hard work! our practices are 3 hours long, 4 times a week- and sex has nothing to do with that.

Anyway, I am really glad to hear some of you will be coming out tomorrow night!

Once again, I never said there was anything wrong with it, in fact I said there was nothing wrong with it. I simply was trying to understand. I think that fishnets and short-shorts with ass-cheek-bottoms hanging out speak of sexual undertones in the scene, and I am curious about it. Don't get mad  it seems like it has some quasi-burlesque elements. You all choose to make it that way, own it.

/by the way, c*ck (wow, I just tried to abbreviate carrieocitykills and that is what happened, strange) your ass is nothing to be ashamed of(the fact that I even know kind of proves my point).

//Juice, I'll PM you a shot of my ass and Bawls if you like.

:D this turned into a fun thread now didn't it?
