My wife and I walked to Lumiere tonight and noticed a new bar called Skybox in the old Planet Hollywood spot. On our way home we stopped in for a sixer and talked to the great staff there. They have been open for several weeks but have not advertised yet. The bar is owned by several celebs including Nellie, Faulk, Hughes and Miles. It is the sports bar that downtown desperately needed. It is like an ESPNZone on HGH.

If there is another thread on this please forgive me, I was excited to post this.

I read about the possibility of this, but I didn't know it had opened yet.

Odd that Nellie would be involved in this. I wouldn't have even thought she hung around sport celebs much. Maybe it is a dueling piano/sports bar?

I was thinking Don Nelson, the NBA coach. He'd be OK right?

Forgive me Nelly on the spelling of your name. I guess I had a few more than I thought there before I posted last night.

I thought Miles Davis was dead..... Who would have thought he'd team up with Fertado?

PostFeb 16, 2008#10

It just occured to me..... Could you IMAGINE if Miles were still alive and opened a Jazz club in STL???? That makes me sad that that will never happen.... Wow did I get off topic.... Maybe I'll start a new one in Urban Living

If Miles Davis were still alive, he'd live in LA or Manhattan and if he opened a club it'd probably be somewhere on Manhattan Island, maybe Harlem. Don't think he had much love for St. Louis...

I think I'd rather have Ms. Furtado hanging around town than Cornell Haynes Jr. FWIW. Whoa, Nelly! 8)

I know this is in another thread - but there's not even a website for this place - not even one saying "opening soon". Seems a little odd that such a place wouldn't have one

Muh!? Why didn't this come up on a google search? C'mon Marshall - get your act together.

In other news -

70 HI DEF SCREENS??? What is that - over 200,000 worth of restaurant in just the TVs? Why?

I'm a bit concerned about the menu honestly. Nothing on it seems that special for the area, and the prices are generally higher I think that closer sports bars like Show Mes or Hooters. Plus, what's with the small "dinner" menus filed with steaks? Is this a bar trying to be a restaurant, or a restaurant trying to be a bar? I certainly hope the food is good, and hoe this place does well for the St. Louis sports bar scene - but right now, all signs point to iffy.

Thank God, we need a decent sportsbar in this town!

Looks really nice in the pics and the think they are right on with the menu. I look forward to checking skybox out soon.

I agree about needing a decent sports bar. For a sports town, St. Louis has subpar "sports" bars.

IMO, the final test of this sports bar won't be the food but the games they pick up. If they have every sports package available then they have passed the true test and will get my business. However, if they have basic cable then they are just a circuit city restaurant trying to pose as a sports bar.

Went to Skybox last night.

The place is awesome, very big, lots of TV's (even in the stalls!). I had Nelly's wings and they were great, another person had the avocado sandwich, and the chicken salad. All the food was great even the ketchup which is not your normal ketchup.

They are working on the patio for a summer opening and when I asked them if they had any special plans for them the hostess (at the 50 yard line-wood floors are made to look like a football field) said that nelly plans on doing both planned and surprise concerts on the balcony!

The cigar room is also very cool, with signed jerseys, footballs etc.

I am not sure why you think this place looks "iffy". The have spent a lot on this place and it will be great to head to on game days and just an evening out. Please do not compare this to Hooters and Show me's, not even the same thing.

*on another note, downtown was crazy packed last night, after skybox we headed to Lumiere for drinks and some games, checked out the hotel lumiere bar as well (very nice remodel) and then the bar at the four seasons. <----- The view from the bar/restaraunt, pool etc is amazing. Everywhere was packed last night, lots of activity on the landing even with the rain. After we cabbed to the loft district to finish the night..... :D

Wow - if I had a dollar for every time someone said that about someplace on the landing or elsewhere in STL...

Remember - if being close to the dome = $$$ then the landing would be 10x more prosperous 10 years ago than it is today. The dome simply doesn't generate enough events on a regular basis for that logic to be true.

And I'm not saying the decor of Skybox and Hooters is the same (cause that wold be copyright infringement), I'm saying LOOK AT THE MENU. Switch steaks and seafood and the two menus are very very similar (as are all sports bars). And the previous two mentioned are considerably cheaper. I realize what they're trying to do - but does anyone remember Jacques? Lots of TVs, in a hotel, near kiel, close to the metrolink station....and it failed?

I don't WANT skybox to fail - healthy businesses are good for the city - but there's nothing about this restaurant that says to me "I should go out of my way for this place". But maybe I'll be proven wrong.
