Shhh. Don't remind me that I chose the wrong neighborhood when I bought my house two years ago. I almost bought in TGS, and frankly, I'd rather be there.

Nothing against good ol' Carondelet, it has its advantages and plenty of charm in some spots, but there are times when I feel like I can count the number of people contributing to my immediate area's gentrification on one hand. :(

Seriously, congratulations on the new house! I think you've moved into a great area, and it sounds like Local Harvest has already established itself as an asset to the neighborhood. I'm going to have to check it out soon!

I was so tired, I posted the following in the Macklind Business District post just because someone posted a picture of a red-brick building getting rehabbed.

Anyhow...

The building directly across the street from the Tin Can is being turned into a brick oven pizza place. The restaurant will be called the Three Monkeys. Its menu is posted on the window. It looks like they have a lot of options.

The owner of the Three Monkeys restaurant also purchased the car wash down the street. He or she immediately demo'd the snow cone stand and repaved the car wash lot. Hopefully, the owner will eventually fill it in. I suspect it will become parking for the district at some point though.

I know I'm commiting blasfemy, but a parking lot would be better than that sh*thole carwash.

Brick-oven pizza? Yum! Man, this area is really taking off lately!

And yeah, I know, I bought a house in the wrong 'hood. Don't remind me.

Count me in among those who'd rather see a parking lot than that car wash.

And I've almost gotta agree with you Three One Four... I have a friend who bought in TGS just 3 doors off Morganford last year, I bought in Carondelet the year before. I've been a bit jealous...

There is a connection but I think the building owners and not the business owners are the same or something like that.

I've rented an apartment in Tower Grove Heights for seven years (and a couple of other apartments for two years before that, and I spent part of my childhood there, when it was anything but trendy). Now that I'm in a financial position to think about buying a house, I'm pretty much priced out of the place.

I hope Morganford continues to develop, and makes the residential area west of Morganford a more viable option for my young family. There are an awful lot of tumbledown properties over there, along with the assorted pathological riffraff that patronize the 7-11. Now, it's just still a little too sketchy for me to want my daughters playing in the front yard. I'd like to be able to catch it at that ideal point on the arc upwards: after a certain amount of healthy activity has begun, before the houses get too expensive.

Namewise, I like MoFo. But I also like just plain Morganford. Skinnytown is horrible.

I'm not sure if there is a better place to ask this question on the forums but can anyone recommend a reputable dry cleaners relatively close to Tower Grove South?

We have curtains and area rugs that need to be cleaned and would rather take a recommendation from someone than 'wing it' on this one.

On the south side of Gravois at Gustine (across from US Bank and the Shop N Save complex), there is an inexpensive place that I have used for clothes. Never had any problems and very convenient to TG South. I would avoid the Orpheum on S. Grand simply because, IMO, their prices are outrageous.

The one at Gravois and Gustine is a National Cleaners. I've taken things there and put a rush on them. They met a tight timeline and did a fine job although it was a pretty simple job. The Orpheum has handled more difficult jobs (stains) for me. It's also been around for about 70 years and I respect that. Respek!

I called the place at Gravios and Gustine and they don't do area rugs, of which I have three. The nice lady at National recommended Woodards in Brentwood. She did however offer to do the curtains we have for $15 - $25 per. Not sure how competitive that rate is -- gotta do some more calling around.

<rant> And regarding how long a business has been around -- I take that with a grain of salt after our recent move. I picked a moving company, Father and Son Movers, based primarily on the fact that they "had been in business in St. Louis since the early 1900's" (and secondarily because they were cheaper than the other place I was considering) and I'm amazed that they are still in business at all.

They showed up 2 full hours earlier than what I was promised, which in some cases would be a good thing, but when you're trying to coordinate activities on a moving day, not so much. They came out with a broken lift on the truck (be mindful I was paying by the hour and they knew the lift was broken when they showed up), had horrible attitudes, terrible work ethic, and absolutely no manners. I'm not asking that the movers give me the warm fuzzies over my choosing them but at least don't be discordant directly to my face when asked to put a piece of furniture in the basement versus leaving it in the room THEY suggest. They told us at the beginning of the move, in exactly the manner you're probably thinking, that "tips weren't required, but if we'd take care of them, they'd take care of us. wink, wink" Shouldn't it be the other way around? They damaged several pieces of our bedroom furniture, placed our mattress on the wet ground, then, to top off their aforementioned mechanical flaws and lack of professionalism, one guy dragged a chair across the (original) hardwood floors in the foyer leaving a path of destruction in his wake.

I'm attempting to file a claim with the company now for ONLY the damage to the foyer floors and the process is as follows: send a letter requesting a claim form to their office in Kansas City, wait for them to return a claim form to me, then resend the completed claim form back to the Kansas City office. In business since the 1900's and still using the friggin' Pony Express to handle claims. <explicative> I have no "Respek" for this company. :x </rant>

Now that I've taken us completely off topic from what I originally took us completely off topic with, might I suggest to the mods to create a business category based forum whereby local residents can provide reviews/recommendations/opinions/etc of local, established businesses. If such a thing already exists for the St. Louis area, please make it known! :)

Tower Grove market yields new grocery boutique

By Gail Appleson

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

07/05/2007

Patrick Horine started the Tower Grove Farmer's Market.

(Kevin Manning/P-D)

At a time when big grocery chains are hungry for unique ways to differentiate themselves from Wal-Mart Supercenters, Patrick Horine has cooked up a concept to make his tiny new Tower Grove South market a food shopping destination.

His goal is for at least half of the inventory to hail from within 150 miles of St. Louis, whether it be lavender shampoo or pink banana squash.

And although Local Harvest Grocery, at 3148 Morganford Road, has only 800 square feet, it is packed with local and regional brands that can't be found at the chains.

"Our goal is to carry things you might not recognize," said Horine. "We want to be unique."

I interviewed for my current job in this neighborhood almost a year ago and it's so amazing to see all the things that have changed in such a short period of time! Stella Blues and Tin Can are great neighborhood places and now Local Harvest and...a Brick Oven Pizza place??? Wow! I'll be very happy when that opens!

BTW: Local Harvest is amazing!! Very tasty lunch stuff!

In regards to the question about property ownership on Morganford, the same gentleman owns the following properties of Stella Blues, Three Monkeys, the car wash and CK Designs: Concrete for the Imagination, which we rent from him. He has made significant contributions to the Morganford area. The name of the property company that owns these properties is JUH Commercial Properties LLC.

CK Designs currently rents the space at 3151 Morganford since June 2006. Due to company growth and business expansion, we are moving to a larger 5000 square foot building Downtown at 3021 Locust in August 2007. I am not sure what he is planning to do with our space once we leave but are currently enquiring.

We have enjoyed working on Morganford and in that area. We are sad to leave but need to for business growth. We are excited to be moving Downtown. The part of Locust we are moving to is booming with new developments. I will go down and takes some pics of the new projects and post them to the group.

I agree.

What is the dividing line between Midtown and Downtown? Jefferson? 22nd? 20th?

Thanks for education of Midtown vs Downtown. I did not know that. So CK Designs: Concrete for the Imagination is moving Midtown. I was just over at our new location at 3021 Locust and there are so many new business opening on that street. I saw a sign for a new Chocolate Martini place. I will get pics up on the forum within the next couple of weeks.

So Stella Blues is a pretty nice hangout. Was there last night for my second time. They have a pretty good beer selection too. The crowd was 30 and older but I have been there on a weekend night. Nice looking twentysomethings.
