Looking at the city map, I'd say it's either "tower grove south" or "bevo," depending on what part of Morgan Ford we're talking about.

What do people who live, work, and play in the area call it? South City?

^ I like those names better too - but don't have a problem with re-naming - if someone thinks it will work - and if it catches on . . . I'm not sure Skinnytown is here to stay. I think calling that area simply "Morganford" is easy enough and makes sense. I'm not wild about "The Grove," but it's easy to remember and has given a name to an area that not a lot of people were familiar with. "Forest Park Southeast" just doesn't have a ring to it.

If it works, it works. I typically use "Forest Park Southeast" when describing where I live, but use "The Grove" to describe where the restaurants/bars are located. Maybe "The Grove" just sounds more like an entertainment destination than a place to live. It will be interesting to see how the infill housing and new construction along Chouteau will be marketed. If they use "The Grove" maybe everyone will use it.

I think "the Grove" is catching on, and I suppose it's a somewhat more elegant handle than "you know, Manchester, down there by Vandeventer, but not further west than Kingshighway."

Skinnytown probably would catch on too if there were as many "hot spots" as on Manchester, and if enough of those people referred to their location as Skinnytown. Well, as we've all agreed, names have to start somewhere right?

Wait, I followed that link, but didn't see anything about the Origin of the name, just a reference to it. Where does it come from? Oh, BTW, I live right near there and, as mentioned earlier, my girlfriend lives there. We just call it TG South, and if we are talking to the area along Margan Fard, we call it Margan Fard.

It pairs nicely with my preferred name for the Touhill Performing Arts Center: the TouPAC.

That's brilliant!

I think "Skinnytown" comes from that newsletter and is called so because the area of development is literally skinny - just along Morganford.

I also love the morganford area, it, along with forest park southeast are tops on my list of places to move. Ive been close a few times, and the buyers remorse is tough.

Not that im really in the know, but im willing to bet that the people here are the only ones using term skinny town, and i think you should stop. Its stupid, its lame. When i hear it, i think poser.

I also think that 'The Grove' is quite lame. The place has a name, it does not need a new one. All calling it 'The Grove' does is make if seem like a Starbucks product...

Dont get me started on 'The Loft District'....

Next thing you know every neighborhood is gonna have a jingle that goes with it. Its a neighborhood, not a product.

I like MoFo. It's catchy. But given the horrible accent that even curses my native tongue, wouldn't it be MarFar?

It could always be used to counter our annual placement on the "Fattest cities in America." 8)

"The Grove" seems appropriate for the Business district. On Cherokee you have "Cherokee Station" which is primarily in Benton Park West and "Antique Row" which is primarily in Benton Park. A seperate name for the business district vs the residential neighborhood is not uncommon.

"The Grove" bothers me because people might get it confused with the Tower Grove Park area. I know that it's short for "Adams Grove" and that TG Ave goes through the neighborhood, but really, the businesses are mainly on Manchester. And "Tower Grove" is a well-used name for a different part of town.

^ Maybe. Too bad they couldn't use "Manchester Strip" since everyone would confuse it with Manchester, MO or any of the 100's of strip malls along Manchester Ave. What about "Manchester Terminus (maybe Terminal)"? Sounds a little like a diagnosis, but it's the end of Manchester and there may be a Metrolink stop there in a decade or so . . . In the end I think it's fine - "The Grove" doesn't seem to me to be any more confusing than the directional Groves (TGS, TGE) and those are huge neighborhoods. Maybe I'll keep thinking . . .

I would like to encourage everyone to go to this place and spend at least $5. Nobody is going to be doing all of their shopping here, but you can pick up a loaf of locally baked bread or ice cream or pick up some organic tortilla chips and homemade salsa. That's not much to ask and it would make a real positive impact. They have great stuff, a lot of it I've seen at either Trader Joe's or Whole Foods plus they have locally produced stuff. It's a charming market that every neighborhood should be lucky enough to have. Maybe someday we will.

It's near the corner of Morgan Ford and Juniata. Just a block South of Arsenal.

I agree completely. We went on Saturday and I anticipate great things for this place. But, like all small local start-ups, they need local support and, in some cases, a concerted effort from people to choose to buy certain things from them. One of the greatest aspects (IMO) of city living is a diverse retail environment. St. Louis needs more small grocery, and the success of Local Harvest may encourage more people to take the plunge.

My wife is actually a local chocolotier and recently started her own business. Local Harvest is carrying her chocolates in their bakery case. The owners are fantastic people who also run and organize the Tower Grove Market. Their vision for supporting local farmers and producers year round is truly commendable. Hopefully they will get the neighborhood suport they need to get their project off the ground. With the work they've put into it, they certainly deserve it.

I definitely will - I can't wait to check this place out! Maybe with enough support, the store will be successful enough to move into the old grocery store a little further south on MarganFard.

We closed on our new house on Hartfard today. In the few short hours we spent there today we have already met several of our neighbors and I already feel like people in that area really have a sense of community.

Definitely stop by Local Harvest and offer your support. Yesterday after the walk through we went to Local Harvest to offer support via purchasing a gallon of milk, frozen pizza, and two cookies. This store is very well put together and most certainly an asset to the neighborhood.

::sigh:: If only I had the time and money to purchase the boarded up building across the street from our new house and convert it into a beer garden. Only then would my life be complete.
