Now I feel bad about my post.. maybe I'll try it again. The lunch I had there when it opened was pretty good, but nothing amazing or anything.

Seeing Red: Partners battle over a Wash. Ave. eatery's ownership
By Kristen Hinman
Published: March 5, 2008
Mortgage broker Kirk Apazeller says he is the rightful owner of Red, the six-month-old eatery on Washington Avenue. So does landscaper Derek Onstott. Apazeller says he designed the place, drawing inspiration from a handful of coffee-table books on cool club and restaurant designs. Onstott tells the same story.

What an unfortunate mess. I'm not sure about its demise, but rumors of serious issues were not unfounded. Hope this ownership battle can be sorted out soon and for the better.ThreeOneFour wrote:Sounds like rumors of Red's demise have been greatly exaggerated. Hmm...where have I heard that before?

Pretty much what I was alluding to earlier in the thread (that caused some of the naivetistas such concern).
Let's just say that when one eats pizza and drinks Stella's at Vito's while sitting at the bar, and the adjoining bar stools are occupied by a judge, an attorney, a heating and cooling contractor and 2 other guys, one can learn a lot.

Noticed they removed the lettering on the front door from Red and the loan place next door this morning?
Red was open over the weekend. Has anything been worked out?

I also noticed a huge padlock on Reds doors yesterday. Not sure it that means anything but I find it rather unusual.

Are you sure it was Red? I only ask, because I noticed the same thing on the mortgage office doors the other day.

Yep, it's Red. Today during lunch I walked by and peeked in the window. Padlocks/chains on the doors and looks like things are missing from inside.

Sounds like there's a lot of nutjobs in the restaurant business.

That's true. Plus coke is one hell of a drug.

Even if it wasnt Red I don't think I'd eat there for free after what I read today.
I hope they re-reopen. We've been there a couple times and we'd still like to go back again.

I should've worded things differently, because unfortunately, Red's demise appears to be inevitable unless some third party steps in and cleans up the mess. In other words, it'd be a miracle.
I had hoped the rumors posted earlier in this thread about Red were unfounded, and before all of the details unfolded, as a moderator I didn't want forum users to engage in baseless speculation about a business that (at least initially) appeared to be doing well. However, The Central Scrutinizer's account of the situation was obviously right on the money, as those of us that have read the RFT article about Red now know.
I didn't have the chance to make it to Red, as it was always one of those must-try places on a long list that I never got around to trying. It's too bad, because it seemed like a brilliant concept that had its share of fans and added to the diversity of downtown dining. Like I said before, I'd love to see things work out, but after reading the RFT article I'm not exactly optimistic.
The visibile seating in Red is now invisible. What this implies, I'm not sure, above and beyond where people would eat. In addition to the chained door, of course.innov8ion wrote:All the stuff has been moved out of the mortgage place.

Any details? When?

I don't know - they put up a sign on the door.
Looks like things are happening at Copia too?

I guess Downtown Cantina doesn't count because their food sucks.

Is it Besos or Beso's? Kisses or Kiss's? Either way - um, ok. Maybe it is a KISS-themed Mexican restaurant?DeBaliviere wrote:Beso's, a Mexican place, is going in here.

Beso (Beso's) is owned by Derek from Red. Derek was able to pay the back rent and re-gain control of the space.
As far as Copia, I saw ET today; he should have his diner in the Washington Ave Apartment building open in July.
