I think it more has something to do with emergency vehicles not having proper access. With E. K. Sullivan Boulevard being shut down emergency vehicles have no way to get in and out. I think it is more of a safety issue than it is being on federal property. The Park Service wants the event to be on their property if possible.

There's also an issue of cost. The entire event could not be held on the Arch grounds - only 4th of July weekend. Then the stage would need to be taken down and rebuilt elsewhere.

Soldier's Memorial will have a more urban feel, for sure. It will be fun to try something new for a year.

And it will help showcase more of the revitalization that is happening as well as bring more dollars into the surrounding businesses that would not typically see the crowds when held down on the arch grounds. The negative might be for the residents that live right around that area. Could be a big cluster.

But seriously, where are the fireworks going to be?

And is there good parking around Soldier's Memorial or is there a Metrolink stop nearby? Any garages? I rarely go downtown, excuse my ignorance.

This will enable us to use the same large "shells" that make the fireworks at Fair Saint Louis...LIVE on the Levee so spectacular. Festival goers will see the fireworks at a distance, but will have a good view from the Budweiser Main Stage following each concert.

^^Juice, there are parking garages around there. Not sure what they will be charging or how packed they will be (keep in mind Cubs v. Cards all weekend too). There is also street parking in the area--best luck for that would be north and west of Soldiers along Olive and side streets.

Nearest MetroLink stop is Civic Center. 5 blocks walk tops.

Any news for 2009? I haven't heard any plans for this year. The celebratestlouis.org website looks outdated.

Given that we are now in May, it seems something should have been announced by now.

Website is undergoing a complete redesign and some acts are still being added I think but many have been confirmed. Not sure when they will release details.

With Little Feat the following night. Not sure of their lineup anymore, but at one time they were one of the top live acts. Hopefully they are still mostly original members (with the exception of Lowell George, of course).

On the dowside, Gretchen Wilson? Aren't her 15 minutes up?

I'm definitely liking this year's acts.

The Creed fans on MetroMix are not pleased with this lineup:

Probably the best line up since the inception, w/ the exception of Gretchen Wilson who is just not my cup o tea. I wonder if the dude who years ago complained on here that St. Louis was lame because Sonic Youth passed us over on their tour still hangs around.

Wow! The woman who said she nor anyone she knew had heard of any of those acts astounds me. I'm sure her bridge club is upset that Tony Bennett won't be there. That, or the girls she rides the schoolbus with are upset that Hannah Montana won't be there.

I'm quite impressed. Especially for a FREE concert series. A good mix of genres, eras & local acts. Even the ones that some of us may not like add quite a bit of to the diversity of the lineup.

Myself, I will definitely be there for Sonic Youth. I hope to make it to see Guster & Lupe Fiasco too, along w/ a few of the locals, but definitely Sonic Youth. I WILL be there.

D'oh! I'll be out of town for the Sonic Youth show. Damn the luck!

For a minute I was soothed thinking the Black Crowes were playing the following weekend when I was back in STL.

Then I realized I was looking at the 2008 schedule

The following weekend this year--Gretchen Wilson

maybe I'll just stay out of town.
