Best Camping!

Got the skinny on upcoming events and fun things to do? Don't be shy...
We have a thread on best hikes... so I wanted to start one on Best Camping.

I am currently looking for some place near St. Louis (2 hour drive max) for a basic campsite to pitch a tent. 8) Quiet, scenic, outdoorsy.

Anyone have some suggestions?
Shawnee National Forest in So-Ill
by giving yourself two hours from Saint Louis you've got a lot of options for sure! if you're looking for something more adventurous how bout primitive camping on a Missouri River sandbar or MDC conservation area? Quite a few Mo State Parks are also good options and it should be a rather quite time now as we're in that sweet spot of fewer crowds between Labor Day and peak fall colors. So even Shut-ins camping should be rather quite and within your drive time.
I would agree. Lots of good options. If you're thinking just drive-up camping, Hawn State Park near Ste. Genevieve is one of the best places I've been. At Johnson's Shut-Ins they have some great sites and facilities because the whole place was recently completely renovated due to the flood. They have hike-in (about a quarter mile tops) sites that combine a little of the fun of backpacking with the convenience of driving up and parking. If you want to do some serious camping, I always recommend canoe camping on the Current River, or maybe backpacking in the Bell Mountain Wilderness area, where you can camp at some of the highest points in Missouri (a lofty 1700 ft.!)
Awesome! Already 10x better info than I could find on google!
you may also want to check out the Ozark Trail Association's website about some possible hiking or biking trails to go along with camping if you choose that beautiful neck of the woods. You can check out the Trip Builder, etc.
