Nathaniel Hawthorne School Redevelopment, 1351 N. Hanley

Developers are hoping to renovate this empty school building for 37 market-rate apartments, along with 10 attached townhouses.

The zoning needs to be changed from "Public Activity District" to "High Density Residential". That might put the neighbors off (mostly single family houses), but since the site has been vacant for years, and the proposal calls for market rate units, I think it's got a chance. The U City Department of Community Development has recommended approval. I live a couple of blocks away, and hope it moves ahead.
