I could smell the smoke as I walked to my car on the Landing at 3:45 Saturday morning. I had no idea what it was from at the time. I hope Copia is able to rebuild!

I would like to thank the good people with the fire department for doing a great job and keeping the fire from spreading into any of the ajacent buildings

I had a roof fire in my condo building several years ago, thus a first hand experience with firemen in a crisis situation. They put out the fire, and they were helpful, compassionate, and understanding.

I must say despite all of their "off-the-court" troubles and controversy, these guys do a great job when it counts.

Hear hear. When it comes down to get the job done, we have a great team of professionals. The fire was responded to FAST (as per the news) and put out with no casualties.

Now.... if only we could catch the a** wipe who did this......

wow, I cant believe this. I am a little miffed I did not hear about it on the news tho i havent had the TV on in about a week- i gets my news online.

i caught an apt on fire about 8 years ago. it was all my fault and it was horrible. i did not have renters insurance and lost everything, almost my life. so incredibly stupid. i swear to god or ala or budha or whoever that I blew all the candles out before I went to bed but i guess not all the way b/c i woke up at 4am with black smoke to think even a 100 watt lightbulb could not be seen thru it all. i had to run out totally nekkid (since that is how i sleep) and knock on doors to get someone to call 911. i could not find my phone in all the smoke. one of the firemen had to be hospitalized even- probably the kind soul who went back in to get my cat. firemen truly are the greatest of heros.

anyway, its a frightening situation to be woken up by a fire and I hope everyone is okay!

Absolutely dying for another chance. Wish she had gotten it because from what I've heard the victory party would have been a blast! Really though, lets not all go to pieces over this...Bottom line Bomber 1, Bhutto 0, and I would've given the given the points from the get go...

I am going to hell.

Anyone catch me on news 4...I was extremely disheveled, fresh back from my parents house where we sought refuge. I look good pointing...and what is up with that girl talking about Bison meatloaf when the place just got torched by some nutjob who boshes the bishop to burning buildings. "That place had AMAZING bison meatloaf..."

Wow. what a scoop!

Police report closing in on suspects in Copia fire

By Jake Wagman

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

01/03/2008

ST. LOUIS — Police believe they are close to identifying who torched a downtown restaurant last week.

Copia Urban Winery, in the city's Washington Avenue loft district, was gutted by flames on Saturday. Police believe it was arson.

"The investigation is looking at some pretty serious suspects right now," said Police Board President Chris Goodson.

Goodson also said that authorities have found no link between the Copia fire and a string of earlier arsons. From April 2006 to June 2007, four upscale residential projects, including one tied to Goodson, were damaged in fires that bear a slight resemblance to last week's wine bar blaze.

I did not know they were in financial trouble. It would really pi** me off if this was for any financial "gain".

Eh, it sounds like those lawsuits were of some disagreement, or some bad accounts payable management.

$1,500, $7000, $4,000 lawsuits... That isnt "financial trouble" if one cant pay those bills, that would be classified as "financial DOOM." I am sure just like any business... people sue people.

these do not seem to be major finacial issues, rather some issues with contractors and vendors over relatively small issues. Most ofthe time there is a disagreement and the parties will negotiate out a settlement, but at some point a contractor has to file a mechanics lien or lose the right to do so, so they do this to preserve their "hand" in negotiations...this kind of stuff is typical of any restaurant I would think...

now, if they werent making hteir rent payments or payroll, that would be a major issue...

I worked for a restaurant once that couldn't manage their revenue. Besides not paying suppliers, they were late with payroll. Chances are the arson is an unpaid employee.

The situation illustrates the difference between restauranteurs that have good ideas and those that can successfully manage them.

It's funny but I can visit a restaurant as a customer and tell you within a minutes if the place is in the red or black. The signs are everywhere and are difficult to hide.

Are you kidding me? He's going to have to worry about pay plenty. Getting a hold of enough cigs to keep your butt (literally) safe in city prison is going to occupy most of his day, I'm sure.
