Thought I'd start a new topic as it seems there will be 3 separate streetscape projects for Grand Ave in 2010 in addition to the Mill Creek viaduct replacement project. They are:
  • Grand Center - Page to Lindell
  • Chouteau to Park
  • South Grand - Arsenal to McDonald
For the segment from Chouteau to Park, Grand will be reduced to 4 lanes with a concrete median between northbound and southbound directions, I suppose, very similar to the segment of Grand between I-44 and Arsenal. There will also be dedicated bike lanes on both sides and various improvements to the sidewalks.

I've posted an excerpt of the plans for Grand from Park to Chouteau on my blog.

Thanks for posting.

Do you have any information on the Grand Center streetscape improvements?

I'll post an excerpt of the plans on Monday or Tuesday. My quick glance at the plans shows that Grand Center will have improved sidewalks and accessible curb ramps... and that's about it.

Well, it seems I missed my self imposed deadline by 12 hours. Anyways, I've posted the plans for the Grand Center streetscape project (Page to Lindell) on my blog.

I think it's f'ing retarded (all apologies Mrs. Palin) that there isn't street parking on Grand in this area. The effect is that when you drive down Lindell and look up Grand it looks d-e-a-d. If there's no traffic then there's nothing. It looks abandoned. Any possibility of sidewalk dining is unappealing due to traffic moving 30+ mph just two feet away. Why is the heart of our performing arts district reserved solely for moving vehicles. That's ridiculous. WHY?

That is so true. I tweeted last summer to Mayor Slay asking him whether we could get a ban on 18 wheelers on Laclede's Landing during business hours after an outdoor lunch was pretty much ruined by the idling massive truck that parked in front of Hannegan's right after we ordered. He said it was up to Laclede's Landing Association, not the City. But if people want to have a city that encourages street life, you've got to accommodate and promote street life other than big stinky trucks and fast-moving cars!

I've had to tell the driver of the fire truck to shut off the engine when parked in front of sidewalk diners.

I agree with this. There will be a lack of foot traffic if there is no on-street parking. I'm not a big fan of huge parking garages and lots (which is virtually dead space), but I have nothing against street parking (diagonal or conventional).

Okay, last post on city streetscape projects for a while. There are a pair of streetscape projects slated for South Broadway and Cherokee that I haven't seen any news on, so I posted excerpts of the plans. I believe they're both rather ordinary. No explanations, you'll have to look at the plans yourselves.

Are all of the sidewalks in Grand Center being replaced, or just cleaned up. Many of the trees that were planted in the sidewalks during the 90's have been removed, but the iron grates in the sidewalks have remained, waiting for someone to fall into. Also, new sidewalks need to be added on Olive East of Grand. Has much work been done yet?

They're taking a kind of hop-scotch approach in Grand Center. They want to finish one block, then proceed to another, then another. Not really sure why.

Framer, what are referring to? Are they fixing the sidewalks in a hop scotch approach or improvements in general. Can you tell me which block they are concentrating all there energies on now?

^Sidewalks. You'd think they'd do them all at once and get it over with, but they just keep jumping around all willy-nilly. I guess they want to keep the pedestrians "on their toes".

I can only guess that the delay to the viaduct replacement has delayed/prolonged the work on the various Grand streetscape projects.

Anybody who has walked down Vandeventer in SW Garden in the past six months can tell you why the Grand approach is better. There's still no sidewalk.
