I know it's in the burbs, but I thought it had the potential to maybe trigger a discussion.
BELLEVILLE -- After seeing a police sign posted near his residence and calling his apartment a suspected "drug house," 29-year-old Thomas Cureton said he thinks police are being unfair.

The sign, posted for parts of Wednesday and Thursday near the apartment building at 322 W. H St., included his unit number and said, "Warning! Drug House; Enter at your own risk."

Cureton hasn't been charged with selling drugs at the apartment, where he lives with his wife and brother, though his prior convictions do include drug possession with intent to distribute in 2006, before he lived there. He also was convicted in 2004, 2005 and 2006 of possession of a weapon by a felon.

Hmmm...interesting. This is near my house and I don't recall seeing this sign. However, there are a few drug houses on that street and I would love to see this problem resolved. I really don't know about this particular situation though.
While Belleville may seem like the 'burbs' to STL city dwellers, downtown/Main Street is very much an urban area for this town. We moved here from South city 2 years ago, and love living in the historic area near downtown Belleville. It's a nice combo of what we loved about the city (old architecture, national historic register with neighborbood shops). Except that it's much more affordable (and closer to work for me). Plus, we can still zip into STL for dinner and visits w/ friends within 20 minutes. Not bad for the 'burbs'.

Agreed - my wife and I used to live in an old storefront in the historic part of Belleville. Cool old brick building, and it was just a 10 minute walk to the Metrolink to go to work.

Hmmm...good reminder that I shouldn't forget about the east side. Access to MetroLink would make it a possibility for my family (if we ever chose to leave the city).

If he's innocent, then that is wrong.

If he's guilty, then I bet he's glad about all the new "customers" the police got him.

^ Yeah - the sign kind of rubs me the wrong way, not sure what it accomplishes.

Belleville has a great old downtown and is a prideful place. Alex, you may decide to visit and take a look around the entire city before you consider migrating from FPSE. I grew up there, St. Louis is much different than Belleville. Don't get me started on the cops. I've got stories that go on and on.

Well, I'm not leaving FPSE anytime soon - work, school and more are keeping us here, but I've heard from a few people that Belleville's a nice place.

My apologies if I made it sound like I was talking down on Belleville. I've been a staunch defender of the Metro East for the past few years on this forum, so I understand exactly what you're saying and completely agree.

As former citydwellers, I have to say that it is a little different in urban Belleville than urban St. Louis. I still struggle with my love of the city and loving our historic home in a quiet but pedestrian downtown area. I think that if there are people renting in the city who are looking to live/buy in a cool neighborhood with affordable (and large) historic houses, near restaurants and good schools this would be the place. We would love to see new blood from the city (or wherever) help us revitalize the downtown Belleville area. These neighborhoods are ripe for change and development. However, some of the older Bellevillians really resist change. If there are any Belleville folks reading this and are interested in helping out, I'd love to hear from you!
